Busy Weekend!

09/10/2022
There has been loads going on over the end of the week and the weekend, and plenty to keep you up to date with! From kind donations, working with guinea pigs and much more!
Behind the scenes work going on within the rescue is keeping me truly busy! We have had a selection of lone boars join a herd together. The reason for this is to start a socialisation process with them and the end goal is having them at a point where they learn how to socialise and interact with each other in a balanced and civilised way!

For obvious reasons this takes a lot of knowledge, understanding, time and effort and I have to constantly monitor and assess each guinea pig within the herd based on risk of falling out and injury. This means assessing the herd as a whole and all the individual relationships between each guinea pig, and taking into consideration personalities, interactions of each guinea pig one on one and how they cope as a whole individually as well!

So this is an ongoing and busy thing to be doing, making sure I assess the situation correctly and don't cause unwanted injuries and fall outs!

As well as this I am also working with someone elses guinea pigs to try and work on behaviour correction and get them back home rather than having them end up permently in rescue!

I was originally surrendered 3 guinea pigs, who had been adopted as a herd. At 4 months old and lacking the social interactions they needed, they hit the dreaded adolescent and started falling out with each other. The over dominant one has entered the herd as this is going to be the most beneficial route for over dominance and behaviour correction!

This has left an unsettled two boars slightly argumentative and testy with each other, so due to safety fears they were also surrendered. However on surrender it became apparent that the new environments and neutral grounds was becoming beneficial for them working on their bond and working through their issues. This means we have made the decision to allow them time and for myself to take the appropriate steps to help reinforce the bond clearly already there, and work to get them back home instead of staying in the rescue system!

As well as this, with all of the recent surrenders lately we have ran out of cage space and have spent the last few days with a bonded pair in a playpen until a lovely Holly donated a cage she no longer needed, and we were then able to move that pair into the cage, and out of the playpen!

Because of the over surrendered amount lately we have been desperately trying and as of currently, failing to also provide some of our bonded boar's foster homes! For this we are looking for people with experience, who have a set up already, and can provide care possibly long term, as we can't garentee adoptions!

Anyone who is able to provide a foster placement for a pair of guinea pigs is massively appreciated so we have space within our rescue for emergency surrenders and provide emergency care and help where needed as currently we are so full this is limited!

In between all this going on, we have also had the kids back at school and completing school runs and routines again, so all in all its been a very busy end of the week!!
